Rolf Petersen, Copenhagen Asbestos Symposium, December 12, 2014.
“Despite the ban in 1986 on the use of asbestos, asbestos is still the work factor that causes most deaths in Denmark.”
“The number of deaths caused by asbestos is 4‐5 times higher than the number who die in accidents in the work place.”
The Copenhagen Asbestos Symposium noted the following factors as having caused the asbestos tragedy in Denmark and elsewhere:
- lobbying by the asbestos industry for continued use of asbestos
- failure of government regulatory authorities to take action
- the role of scientists funded by the asbestos industry, who claimed that asbestos could be safely used.
